Date Published: 8/3/2010
Format: PDF
Annotation: Columbia University’s National Center for Disaster Preparedness conducted telephone interviews with 1,203 coastal residents in Louisiana (481 households) and Mississippi (722 households) to determine the short- and long-term effects of the Gulf Oil Spill. The particular concerns of the survey were: numbers of people who had been exposed to the oil spill (direct exposure was defined as: involved in the cleanup, come in contact with the spill or cleanup, suffered property damage), the immediate and perceived long-term effects (physical: respiratory or skin reactions; emotional or behavioral problems) of the oil spill on local children, the impact of the oil spill on decisions about daily life activities (what foods they eat, impact on vacation plans, restriction of children’s recreational activities), and residents’ perceptions about the reliability of the information they are receiving about the spill. They found that 40% of the population had some exposure to the spill; 33% of their children were having emotional or physical reactions to the spill; 8% have lost jobs; 25% are considering relocation as a result of the spill; and those most deeply affected were those with the lowest incomes....[See more] [See less]
